Resurrecting Deadsticks (Part 2 of 3)

Wednesday, December 28, 2011

(continued from yesterday, 12/27/11) “Most amazing,” Holst continued, “Was the total contrast in walleye behavior, relative to the activity level of the minnows on our hooks. I think most anglers would be surprised by how often their minnows aren’t swimming in ways that attract fish. Every time our baits failed to show signs of life—neither kicking their tails nor attempting to flee—walleyes coasted on by without even giving the little morsels a look. I think they literally viewed the hook and motionless minnow as an inedible, inanimate object. On the other hand, when we had an active minnow down there, fish reaction was usually very aggressive. Even though these walleyes were actively hunting food, they absolutely would not consider biting unless our baits were lively and kicking. Whenever a minnow thrashed its body, these big walleyes lost all inhibition and became deadly hunters.”  Read Full Story

Resurrecting Deadsticks (Part 1 of 3)

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

The rod tip of the deadstick springs suddenly and energetically to life. ‘Dead’stick? It seems at once a confusing mix of metaphors for a tactic so reliant on the vigor and vitality of a wild baitfish. Below the ice, dormant or just plain dead minnows take pike, maybe the occasional wintertime catfish. But hang a limp, lifeless shiner or chub before the gaping maws of a hefty walleye, and you might just as well present a wet sock on a hook.  Read Full Story

BugLit a super versatile flashlight

Tuesday, December 20, 2011

While it may appear to be along the lines of a cute toy, the BugLit is actually a hands-free flashlight that gives versatility a whole new meaning. The body is made from the INOVA Microlight—a tough mini flashlight that is encased in a durable polycarbonate plastic housing. It has been built to last and will stand strong against the abuse of the elements. Its moldable, flexible legs are made from Nite Ize's Gear Ties and reach to six inches. Twist them, wrap them, or stand them out straight to create the perfect angle for lighting up the next big task. Secure the BugLit onto zipper pulls or backpack straps to light up travel guides, maps, or fishing knots when out on the lake in the dark. Wrap them tightly onto handlebars and ride home from class at night while seeing better and feeling a bit safer. Its compact size and numerous uses means there's no excuse for leaving home without it. The BugLit is equipped with a white LED light with high and low power, strobe, and signal functions, and has an effective range of up to 50 feet while still remaining visible for up to a mile away. The legs are composed of a tough rubber shell that creates the perfect grip without scratching or marking its resting place. Included with the BugLit is a size 0 S-Biner carabiner clip for even more lighting options.  The BugLit lists for $12.99 and can be bought on-line at  www.niteize.com.   Read Full Story
