RACINE, Wis., November 1, 2016 – Based on a centuries-old formula, the Farmers Almanac forecasts exceptionally cold temperatures throughout the Northern Plains, Great Lakes, Middle Atlantic, and Northeast this winter. Many weather experts agree: the end of El Niño’s warming trend may evolve into a much colder phase called La Niña.
 
This news has ice anglers fired up, many already prepping gear for the approaching hardwater season.
 
One piece of must-have gear for the 2016-2017 ice season is the new ICE HELIX 7 SONAR/GPS from Humminbird®. It’s an easy-to-use fish-finding machine that delivers proven technologies in one unit along with the biggest and brightest screen of any ice fishing combo unit to date.  
 
The high-speed LCD eliminates guesswork with a digital read-out showing your exact depth, as well as a latency-free digital flasher and customizable graph view with up to 8-times zoom. Precision GPS helps you find and return to productive spots, while optional Humminbird LakeMaster charts provide more detail than any other map on ice.
 
Featuring an enormous 7-inch diagonal screen, the ICE HELIX 7 sets a new standard for brightness. At 1500 nits – the standard unit for measuring brightness - mapping data and sonar returns jump off the HD LED backlit display, a benefit in snow-blinding and low-light conditions. Sonar returns are crisp and clean, whether viewing marks in digital flasher mode, sonar, or contour lines on a LakeMaster map. Bottom-hugging fish are easy to identify and target, a big deal when Mother Nature gets fowl and and fish become fickle.
 
Digital Flasher and Sonar Graph Mode

For anglers who prefer a flasher view, the ICE HELIX 7’s Digital Flasher mode is wickedly fast, showing jig and fish returns in real-time, and without the latency found in some digital flasher products. The algorithms found in “Jigging Mode” allow even better jig and fish returns, along with further customization via a Sensitivity control. Anglers can choose from three digital flasher/graph color palettes, depending on where they’re fishing.
 
While the digital flasher offers a traditional view of what’s below, anglers are spending more time fishing in sonar graph mode, which offers several key advantages, as Minnesota ice fishing guide Brian “Bro” Brosdahl points out.
 
“I’m a flasher guy, but I’m using the sonar graph mode more often. Instead of just seeing lines and bottom in digital flasher mode, you see the reality of what’s below – the size of fish schools and their movement, insect life emerging out of the bottom, etc. In digital flasher mode, a fish moving into the cone is identified by the signal strength color and width changing; in the sonar graph mode, you actually see the fish appear from off screen and into the cone. Plus, you can watch your jigging in real time and study how fish respond. This allows me instant modification of my jigging cadence to catch more fish.”
