Great Lakes Angler Magazine makes this instructional offer to introduce you to this method of fishing. Check out Captain Frank Piku’s website (captainfranksfishingcharters.com) for more info.

Frank Piku is a charter captain in the Florida Keys as well as on Lake St. Clair. The following is an explanation of this exciting, fun technique.

GROUPER, SNAPPERS—EVEN A 70-LB COBIA ON A FLYROD
by Captain Frank Piku aboard the yacht GOLDEN STREAKER

Yes, you too can catch big fish on a fly rod and out fish your buddies 3 and 4 fish to their one, even if they’re using live bait.

This proven method I developed has been blowing the socks off anglers that are trying it . This NOT fly fishing; it’s a technique using a fly rod and reel. This is for the regular boat angler who wants to catch a lot of fish. After an angler tries this method he may thinks this is like cheating it so easy and effective.

Now do I have your interest?

Many times fish are just not in an eating mood, or the tide has stopped flowing so the bite isn’t on. There you are fishing with a nice live bait without a bite. Along comes your buddy and takes out his fly rod then starts fishing right next to you and starts pulling up fish one after another. What goes on? Basically he’s aggravating those fish down there to attack his baits or lures. It’s a technique that only a fly rod can produce. Ladies like it as they can battle a big fish physically where it might be impossible with a stand up rod. Some wives on my charter have even asked for a fly rod outfit for their birthday or Christmas

You can buy a complete saltwater fly rod outfit made by CORTLAND LINE CO. for less than $200. That comes with 8- or 9-weight fly rod, a reel loaded with backing and fly line , leader , and carrying case. I’ve used these for 3 years and yet to break one and caught up to a 200 shark on it too. In fact, recently an angler caught a 70lb Cobia on the fly rod using my technique.

Here’s how it’s done.

First load the reel on, strip the fly line thru the eyes of rod, then add a small one once egg sinker onto the fly line. You may have to change sinker to heavier weight if you can’t get to the bottom. Tie on a swivel , then use about 4 feet of fluorocarbon leader by Yo-Zuri and at the end of the leader tie on a 3/8- to 1-ounce brightly colored jig. I prefer hot pink or chartreuse although other colors work, too. Then sweeten it with a strip of squid or a chunk of ballyhoo or any cut bait. I like sardines cut in half. I use the head first, then the tail. Hook the head thru the lips or the tail at the end.

Now you’re ready to aggravate the fish and drive him nuts so he will attack the bait. With this presentation you will awake a sleeping giant. Here’s what you do!!!!! Line in the water and start stripping line off the reel about three feet at a time. This will lower the lure to the bottom in jerks. As soon as you hit the bottom, hold the line tight and raise the fly rod up in a long upward sweep, then lower it down slowly till it hits the bottom again. Bites usually come immediately. Repeat this same action over again and again and if you don’t get hooked up you have either lost you sweetener on the jig or there’s no fish around this spot. If you’re bait is still on, move, because there are no fish.

Do you find that many times before you can get the fish up he’s gone into a hole and locked him self in there and your snagged. With the fly rod method this doesn’t happen very often because your hooking up as you are raising the rod and the fish is going up to grab the lure, if you keep reeling up he can’t get down to the hole and you got him!

Now if your catching smaller fish used bigger baits such as plastic Mulllets , by Vive, or Mega Baits, or D.O.A. These come in 4- to 6-inch sizes and you don’t have to sweeten the lure. Also some small spoons work too but you need to put a sweetner on them. Also if you remove the egg sinker you will be fishing the mid range of the water depth and you should start catching snappers or a cobia.

NOW I’m going to give you another of my secrets. It’s called Gabbies by BOONE MANFACTURING CO. These are candy to fish. When I first tried them I couldn’t get the lure all the way down before they would gobble them up! The other anglers watched me pull in six groupers in a row, a mutton snapper, several yellowtail, and lane snappers. They asked what I was using. Well I couldn’t hide them, so I passed out a Gabbie to each of the anglers using a fly rod and we all started hooking up, while the lone angler using live bait on a stand up rod just stood there. He couldn’t use the Gabbie on his rod—it just wouldn’t work. The only thing I did differently was when it hit the bottom I let it set there for a moment or two and twiched the end of the rod, this drove the fish into a feeding frenzy. Don’t tell your friends till you try it so you can show them up. You can get Gabbies at Key West Marine Hardware just ask for candy for fish that Captain Frank from Golden Streaker ordered. They will be happy to sell you as many packages as you like. They come 4 to a package are pre rigged with hooks and have a small plastic guard on the hook.only cost $4.95 package and come in 5 different colors too. Be sure to take the guard off the hook, it’s much harder to hook up.

To a fish with the guard on it. If they aren’t hooking up to fish go back to the jigs with a sweetener on it till they start attacking the baits then switch to a Gabbie, or try a plastic mullet. Sometimes one thing works when all others don’t, fish have appetites too.

If you try this method and aren’t getting good results come fishing (catching) with me, Captain Frank aboard the GOLDEN STREAKER and I’ll show you how.
